Markdown Previewer — Write and Render Markdown Side-by-Side in Real Time

Markdown was designed in 2004 by John Gruber with one explicit principle: a Markdown file should be readable and publishable as plain text, with the formatting marks being intuitive enough that they do not interrupt reading the raw source. A line starting with ## should look like a header even before rendering because the # marks convey heading intent visually. Text surrounded by **asterisks** reads as emphasized even before the bold rendering is applied. This design philosophy made Markdown the lingua franca of developer documentation, README files, static site generators, note-taking apps, and collaborative platforms — every system that needs text to be authored in plain text but rendered with visual formatting.

Markdown dialects extend the base specification with features that the original specification did not define, producing incompatibilities between rendering environments that a previewer must account for. GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) adds strikethrough text with ~~double tildes~~, task list checkboxes with - [ ] syntax, and fenced code blocks with language specification for syntax highlighting. CommonMark is a standardized specification that resolves ambiguities in the original Markdown spec, producing consistent rendering across tools that implement it. MultiMarkdown adds footnotes, citation support, and tables with column alignment. The previewer specifies which dialect it renders so the output reflects the actual rendering the target platform will produce rather than a generic approximation.

Code block syntax highlighting in the Markdown preview makes technical documentation immediately more readable. A fenced code block tagged with a language identifier — ```javascript, ```python, ```bash — receives syntax-appropriate coloring in the preview: keywords in one color, strings in another, comments in a muted shade, built-in functions distinguished from user-defined ones. This highlighting is applied by the preview renderer and does not require any additional Markdown syntax — the language tag alone triggers highlighting. Seeing the highlighted rendering as you write the documentation confirms that the code block is correctly delimited and that the language tag is recognized, preventing the common error of a fenced block that does not close correctly and renders its closing delimiter as literal text.

  healthy: boolean;
}

export const checkService = async (url: string): Promise<HealthCheck> => {
  const res = await fetch(url);
  return res.json();
};

Deployment Readiness

  • Provision multi-region database read-replicas
  • Configure SSL/TLS certificates (TLS 1.3 only)
  • Complete disaster recovery failover drill
